The question of timber and fuel

supplies in the Colony had become one of

considerable urgency as a result of present

war conditions, and I should like to express my

concurrence in the view that in the interests of

future welfare of the Colony, the Department is

right in redoubling its protection work with a view

to repressing, so far as is possible, depredations

of plantations resulting from the acute fuel shortage.

4. As regards the agricultural section of the

Report, I have noticed with satisfaction that

considerably increased attention has continued to

be devoted to agricultural reconnaissance work.

the New Territories in particular Hong Kong possesses a small but nevertheless valuable agricultural area,

and it is est important to see that the available

land is used to the best advantage.
